Au coeur de l’Église Saint Paul Saint Louis, une inscription sur le second pilier à droite de la nef nous fait franchir 140 ans d’un coup. “La République Française ou la Mort”, probablement écrit en 1871 au moment de la Commune nous rappelle à quel point la défense de cet idéal pouvait coûter cher.

In the middle of the Church of Saint Paul Saint Louis, a haunting inscription will transport you 140 years into the past. On the second pillar to the right of the nave are inscribed the words “La République Française ou la Mort” (Either the French Republic or Death), probably written in 1871 during the Commune uprising, and reminding us of the bloodshed that so often accompanies passionate idealism.
